🎶 About the Festival
Mawazine Festival – Rhythms of the World is one of the largest and most culturally influential festivals on the planet. Created in 2001 under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, the festival was designed to promote tolerance, openness, and dialogue through music. Since then, it has grown dramatically. It now welcomes millions of visitors each year. It also celebrates sounds from around the world while staying true to its mission of cultural understanding.
More than half of Mawazine’s lineup highlights Moroccan artists, giving them a powerful stage and a “springboard” for their careers. At the same time, the festival showcases talents from across Africa and far beyond. Over the years, global icons such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and The Weeknd have performed here. Their presence helped Mawazine earn worldwide recognition.
One of Mawazine’s most remarkable commitments is accessibility. Every year, 90% of its over 3 million attendees enjoy the festival for free, making it one of the most inclusive cultural experiences in the world. Because of this, Mawazine ranks as the second-largest music festival on Earth and the biggest festival in Africa.
The event takes place in Rabat, a city rich in history and culture. Its streets, monuments, and landmarks transform into open-air stages. As a UNESCO World Heritage city, Rabat adds depth, authenticity, and stunning scenery to the festival experience.
The Stages
Mawazine spans 4 main stages, each offering a unique musical universe:
- OLM Souissi – International Stage: The heart of the festival. It hosts the world’s biggest stars and welcomes massive crowds. It is the home of global headline performances.
- Nahda Space – Oriental Stage: This stage celebrates Arabic music. It features modern and classical voices from across the region. The atmosphere is warm, vibrant, and deeply cultural.
- Salé Beach – Moroccan Stage: A true showcase for Moroccan talent. Located along the Bouregreg river, it highlights national legends and rising artists. Styles range from Gnawa and Chaabi to rap, rock, and reggae.
- Bouregreg – Rhythms of the World Stage: Set between Rabat and Salé, it offers stunning views of the Kasbah of Oudayas. It brings together African and world music fans. The focus is on rich traditions and vibrant rhythms.
Discovery & Heritage Stages:
- Mohammed V National Theater – Discovery Stage: An intimate venue known for strong acoustics and cultural heritage. It remains a favorite for both Moroccan and international artists.
- Chellah – World Music Stage: Located inside an ancient UNESCO site, this stage offers a dreamlike environment. It hosts traditional and ancestral music from around the world. It is one of the festival’s most magical and emotionally powerful settings.
Mawazine is far more than a music festival. It is a cultural movement that brings people together. It breaks barriers and celebrates diversity through every performance. Whether you come for global stars, Moroccan legends, or spectacular venues, Mawazine delivers rhythm, heritage, and unity.
