About the Festival
The Mawazine Festival, Rhythms of the World began in 2001 under direction of the King Mohammed VI to encourage cultural tolerance, openness, respect and dialogue. Over the years the festival has grown and changed, it included more and more musicians from around the globe, but its underlying values remain the same. It continues to foster tolerance and respect of other cultures.
More than half of Mawazine’s lineup is dedicated to Moroccan artists, it is known to serve them as a “springboard”. It also features musicians from throughout Africa. Over time it became more international, hosting well-known artists from around the world like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and The Weeknd, who also served as ambassadors to Mawazine, drawing greater international attention to the event.
The Mawazine Festival Rhythms of the World makes a major contribution to the democratization of culture in Morocco, by providing every year, free access to shows and concerts for 90% of the festival’s 2.5 million attendees. This commitment has enabled the festival to attract many people over the last few years. It ranks as the second major World music festival. Likewise, it ranks as the first major festival on the African continent.
The festival takes place in the city of Rabat, which contributes greatly to the success of the festival. It provides streets, historical monuments and symbolic places of Moroccan culture. By hosting this unique event, the city classified as World Heritage by UNESCO becomes an open-air stage. Therefore promoting the authenticity of the history of the capital while working for the creation of a more modern and open Morocco country.
