Experience the Rhythms of Burundi with Group SANGW’IKIYAGO
Group SANGW’IKIYAGO is not just a drumming group, it’s a living symbol of Burundian culture, heritage, and unity. Founded in 1987 with 27 members, the group has grown to become one of the most celebrated cultural ambassadors of Burundi. With members ranging from 8 to 50 years old, they are a diverse ensemble dedicated to keeping alive the rich traditions of Burundian dance and drumming, a tradition that was once performed for the country’s kings.
At the heart of their performances is the Burundian drum, an ancient instrument that has always been a tremendous form of communication and a symbol of national unity. For Group SANGW’IKIYAGO, these drums carry more than just rhythms; they carry a message of hope, happiness, and peace. The group’s mission is to preserve and promote Burundian culture both nationally and internationally, while also using the power of music and dance to heal and unite communities. Their commitment to sustaining this tradition is especially significant in the wake of Burundi’s civil war crisis, which threatened to break cultural continuity.
