About Essence Festival of Culture
The Essence Festival, known as “the party with a purpose”, is an annual music festival that started in 1995 as a one-time event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Essence. Essence is a magazine aimed primarily towards African-American women. The festival quickly became very popular and turned into an annual event, becoming the largest African-American culture and music event in the United States.
While tourism in New Orleans in July is typically slow, the festival draws in millions. It isn’t just a musical event, although great artists perform on the main stage at the Superdome during the three day festival. Artists that performed over the years include: Beyonce, Prince, Cedric the Entertainer, the Dells and Peabo Bryson. Frankie Beverly and Maze have consistently closed the event.
On the side stages you can find performers, motivational speakers and others focused on empowering African-American women to success. The event also offers vendors a place to sell artwork, writing, crafts and fashion pieces. In fact, fashion has become a big presence in the festival over the past two decades.
The Essence Festival of Culture presented by Coca Cola is held in New Orleans and also hosts dozens of policymakers, civic leaders, and entertainers who hold free talks and seminars. Essence Festival is unique among major events in New Orleans and throughout the country. It ranks among the most popular events in the world designed for African-American audiences.
